{Zealously Pursuing Good Deeds~Study in Titus 3}

Free Study in the book of Titus. Info at the end of this post!

What are you zealous for? We are doing a Bible Study in the book of Titus. This weeks chapter teaches us what to be zealous for. Will you join in?Are You Zealous?

  • Totally committed
  • Sold out
  • Dedicated
  • Possessed
  • On Fire
  • Impassioned
  • Fanatical
  • Fervently devoted
  • Passionate
  • Single-minded allegiance
  • Enthusiastically devoted
  • Eagerly desiring to accomplish some goal or end.

For What?

I can think of many things I am zealous for, homeschooling, couponing, writing, teaching, blogging… etc. You can add your list here________________________________________________. We are all zealous for something or some things! That is great and there is nothing wrong with being zealous.

But?

  • Are we zealous for good deeds?
  • Are we zealously pursuing good deeds?
  • Above all else, are we pursuing those deeds which bring glory and honor to God and Christ?
  • Are we zealous for those deeds which build up others rather than tear them down?

Paul writes in Titus 2:15:

Christ gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession zealous for good deeds.

Paul writes in Titus 3:1

Remind them to be ready for every good deed

Paul writes in Titus 3:8

This is a trustworthy statement: and concerning these things I want you to speak confidently, so that those who have believed God will be careful to engage in good deeds. These things which are good and profitable for men.

Paul writes in Titus 3:14:

Our people must also learn to engage in good deeds to meet pressing needs, so that they will not be unfruitful.

The entire book of Titus is calling us to be zealous for good deeds. Yet, we know that we are not saved by our deeds. Ephesians 2:8-9 teaches,

For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is a gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one can boast.

But they are the fruit of our faith. James 2:17 teaches,

Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself.

What is the Motive Behind Our Deeds?

J C Ryle writes:

A zealous man in religion is a man of one thing. He only sees one thing, he cares for one thing, he is swallowed up in one thing; and that one thing is to please God…A zealous Saviour ought to have zealous disciples. J. C Ryle

Our motive in anything we do is to please God. His glory and His honor should be our one thing!

Learning What Pleases God.

Ephesians 5:9-10 teaches, ” (for the fruit of the Light consists in all goodness and righteousness and truth), trying to learn what is pleasing to God.

Paul wrote in Ephesians and in Titus that we are to learn what is pleasing to God. We are born with a nature that desires to please me/myself. But Christ has given us a new nature and a new heart. One that is capable of understanding spiritual things. He has given us the Holy Spirit that guides us into all truth. Let’s pursue what pleases Our Great God and Savior, Jesus Christ.

My Challenge To You!

I want to challenge you (and myself) today. Read through the book of Titus. Look for and record all of the good deeds that God has spoken through His word.

Please share what the Lord has taught you through the reading of His word!

I really enjoyed your post, Lisa, and I accept the challenge to spend time in Titus annotating the good works that He leads us to pursue. J C Ryle is one of my favorite authors and the quote you shared went straight into my commonplace quote book…. a zealous Savior truly deserves zealous disciples, zealous to follow Him! Amen!

    Blessings,
    Dawn
