What is the Gift of Christmas?

Romans Part 2″ In Need of a Savior”

Week-4| Day-1| Lesson 14&15|

The book of Romans does not open with the birth of  baby Jesus, wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.  It does not give an account of three wise men following the star to Bethlehem. There is no mention of gifts for the baby Jesus. We do not have an account of Mary and Joseph, but we do have the story of Christmas!

Romans 5:12-21 is an account of why Jesus came to earth as a baby. Luke says, “And Jesus kept increasing in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.” Christ grew up in the dark world that He came to save.

We will end our study of Romans Part 2 with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, “The Christmas story.”  I am going to record verses from Romans 1-5 to show us why Jesus came into this world as a baby. We will learn why and how God rescues His people from their sin.

Why Did Jesus Come into The World As A Baby?

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness. Romans 1:18

Even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Professing o be wise they became fools and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image. Romans 1:21-23.

Therefore, you have no excuse everyone of you who passes judgment, for in that which you judge another, you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things. Romans 2:1

Because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God. Romans 2:5

Both Jews and Greeks are all under sin: as it is written, there is none righteous, not even one; there is none who understands, there is none who seeks God; all have turned aside, together they have become useless; there is none who does good. there is not even one. Romans 3:9-12

There is no fear of God before their eyes. Romans 3:18

Now we know that whatever the Law says, it speaks to those who are under the Law, so that every mouth may be closed and all the world may become accountable to God. Romans 3:19

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Romans 3:23

Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned-Romans 5:12

The judgment arose from one transgression resulting in condemnation. Romans 5:16

So then as through one transgression, there resulted, condemnation to all men. Romans 5:18

For as through one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners. Romans 5:19

Sin reigns in death. Romans 5:21

How did God rescue His people from their sin?

God promised beforehand through His prophets in the Holy scriptures, concerning His son, who was born of a descendant of David according to the flesh, who was declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection of the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness, Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 1:2-4

But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by the Law and the prophets, even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. Romans 3:21

Being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus; whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. Romans 3:21-25

He who was delivered over because of our transgressions, and was raised because of our justification. Romans 4:25

For while we were helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. Romans 5:6

For while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. Romans 5:10

Why Did God Rescue His People from their sin?

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. Romans 1:16

Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and tolerance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance. Romans 2:4

Because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the holy Spirit who was given to us.  Romans 5:5

But God demonstrates His love toward us, in that while we while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8

Our Christmas Gift

  • We are reconciled
  • We are justified
  • We are sanctified
  • We are saved from the wrath to come
  • We are righteous

We have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ!

I really enjoyed reading this. It reminded me of a comment I heard recently: The reason for the season isn’t Jesus, it’s us. Everything that happened was done for you and I and somehow that thought more than anything else is quite sobering.

I am so grateful that you enjoyed reading this Kendra! That is a very sobering thought. Everything He did he did for sinners! The reason for the season is about Jesus, for without His life, death, burial, and resurrection we would still be in our sin! Praise Him! Merry Christmas!

Romans is so packed with power and great verses to memorize. Thanks for this synopsis of why Jesus came. I love how while the gospels give the “what,” Romans gives the “why.” Have a Merry Christmas!
