{Would You Like to Know Where Your Mind is Taking You?}

Do you ever stop and think about where you are going? Where is your mind taking you? Would you like to know the answer to these question? Follow CTTT as we study Romans 8:5-11. The answers are just a few words away! What is the mark of a true believer? Do you ever ask yourself this question? If you ask yourself this question where do you go to find the answer? Today we will look at Romans 8:5-11 to answer the question, “what is the mark of a true believer?” Looking at Romans 8:5-11 also answers the third question, “where do I go to find out what a true believer looks like?” The answer, the Word of God. I also want to add the Word of God is the only reliable place we can get our information. God has graciously and with a warning gave us everything we need to know.  We are without excuse. Placed between Paul’s worship of Christ and His setting the believer  free from their condemnation of sin he briefly stops to give  a picture of a true believer and an unbeliever.

I use the term “true believer” because there are many today who wear the title of a believer but their lives do not match up with what the word of God describes as a true believer. I look at myself sometimes and I have to say, “Lisa, what you just did and what you just thought does not line up with what the word of God says!” Can you relate to me? I am going to give some grace here because I need some and I want to share it with you because I know you need it too. But this grace is not a license to look into your mirror and walk away forgetting what you look like! Here is the grace you and I need and  it comes right from the Word of God! Romans 7 teaches that a true believer is still bound in this body of death. There are times  I do not do what I want to do. There are times I am doing the very thing that I hate. So, how do I look any different from the man Paul describes as being  in the flesh?  There is a difference between the two. What is the difference? The difference  is their mindset.

The Mind Set on the flesh

In Romans 8:1-4 Paul  just finished teaching that the requirements of the Law have been fulfilled in those who do not walk according to the flesh but walk according to the Spirit.  In this  verse, Paul sets up his next teaching.  I love that the word of God never leaves you guessing nor does it gloss over anything.  There are teachings within teachings and reminder after reminder. God uses His word as a testimony to His goodness and His justice. I for one am glad that God spells it out for me. He knows that I am but dust. {Psalm 103:14, ” For He Himself knows your frame; He is mindful that we are but dust.”} He knows I need to be  taught, warned, and guided.

I believe this passage of scripture serves as a warning for anyone who calls themselves a believer. There are several passages that command a believer to test himself.

Test yourself to see if you are in the faith;examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about  yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you_ unless you fail the test? 2 Corinthians 13:5

Therefore, brethren, be al the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you;for as long as you practice these things, you will neer stumble. 2 Peter 2:10

In light of what these two verses teach let’s go to Romans 8:5-11 and see the contrast between these two opposite people.

For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit the things of the spirit. Romans 8:5

Do you see the difference? Those who walk according to the flesh have their minds set on the flesh. Your mind will take you in the direction that it is set. What does walking in the flesh look like? We can go back to Romans 1 and to Galatians 5:19-21 and answer this question. Please click on the links to the passages to read them for yourself.  Summary, those walking according to the flesh have exchanged the truth of God for a lie and worship and serve the creature rather than the creator. They know God because He has made Himself self-evident but they do not honor Him as God nor give Him thanks. The man walking according to the flesh has his mind set on himself and his pleasures and does not have his mind set on God. If your mind is not set on the things above but rather on earthly things the things below you will produce the deeds of the flesh that are recorded in the two chapters I mentioned above.

Paul gives us a description and the outcome of the mind set on the flesh in Romans 8:5-8.

  1. The mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God.
  2. The mind set on the flesh does not subject itself to the law of God.
  3. The mind set on the flesh cannot please God.
  4. The mind set on the flesh does not have peace.
  5. The mind set on the flesh does not have the Spirit of Christ.
  6. The mind set on the flesh does not belong to Christ.
  7. The body is dead because of sin.

The outcome of the mind set on the flesh is death. Not just physical death but spiritual, and eternal death.

The Mind Set on the spirit

However, you are not in the flesh but in the  Spirit if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Here in verses, 9-11 we see the description and the outcome of the mind set on the Spirit. Note these are opposite of the mind set on the flesh.

  1. The mind set on the Spirit is friendly toward  God.
  2. The mind set on the Spirit subjects himself to God.
  3. The mind set on the Spirit has peace with God
  4. The mind set on the Spirit pleases God
  5. The mind set on the Spirit has the Spirit of Christ dwelling in him.
  6. The mind set on the Spirit does belong to Christ.
  7. Though the body is dead because of sin, the spirit is alive because of righteousness. This righteousness is Christ’s righteousness, not ours.

The outcome of the mind set on the Spirit is life! The mind set on the Spirit is guaranteed a new resurrected body. Because the Spirit of Christ dwells in them.

How do we walk away from what Paul is teaching in this passage? Test yourself to see if you are in Christ. Remember God’s word is a lamp unto our feet. It guides and takes us down the right path. God’s word gives us everything we need to test the spirits to see if they are from Him.
